David Wheater is hopeful Celtic defender Stephen McManus will return to Middlesbrough in a permanent deal this summer.

Wheater and McManus were paired at the heart of Boro's defence after the Scotsman arrived at the Riverside Stadium in a loan move in January. Wheater hopes boss Gordon Strachan can secure a deal to bring the 27-year-old south of the border before the start of the season.

"There will be a few signings I'm sure." Wheater told the club's official website. "I'm the only experienced central defender now so there's obviously going to be some defenders coming in. Hopefully Mick (McManus) will be one of them because we played well together and got on well together too. If we could sign him permanently, I think it would be good for me and for the team."
