There was an air of frustration around the Emirates Stadium after the first leg of Arsenal's Europa League semi-final with Atletico Madrid. With just eight minutes left to play, the Gunners looked comfortable against their Spanish opponents. Alexandre Lacazette had fired the home side into the lead with both Sime Vrsaljko and manager Diego Simeone dismissed in north London.Disaster struck in the 82nd minute, though, when Antoine Griezmann scored an all important away goal from out of the blue.Arsene Wenger was under no illusion that the draw was a good result, lamenting after the game: "Of course it feels like an opportunity missed. We could have qualified tonight but it didn't happen."Unfortunately we gave a goal away from nowhere but now we need to recover from the disappointment and prepare for the next game.

Ozil performed impressively vs Atletico

"Looking at the performance and the way the game went, it was the worst possible result for us, but we have to go there in a positive mood and qualify over there."

If one player could hold their head high after the game, however, it was Mesut Ozil.

His first-half performance in particular caught the eyes of many supporters and pundits alike.

Ozil's reaction to Atletico fans

ESPN gave the German an 8/10 for his showing, noting: "Imperious in the first half as he toyed with the Atleti defence and teased their fans at a corner too. A picture of class throughout."

Teased the fans in the corner, you say...

Ozil was on corner-taking duties for Arsenal during the Atletico clash and had to deliver set-pieces in front of the travelling fans during the first-half.

Usually, a spot of verbal abuse is the only thing thrown at the player but, in this case, it was a baguette that went flying onto the pitch.

Quite why a French stick was the weapon of choice is unknown yet Ozil had the perfect response to the incident - and he received a big cheer from the Arsenal fans in doing so. Take a look below:

Brilliant stuff, albeit rather brave.

One can't imagine a segment of baguette is all that tasty after being marinated on the Emirates pitch, but there you go.

It went down a treat with the Arsenal supporters just as much as his performance.

And Gooners will now be hoping that Ozil can perform with the exact same class and ability at the Wanda Metropolitano as he did at the Emirates.

After conceding such a crippling away goal in the final moments, the Gunners need to deliver the goods in Spain if they're to ensure the perfect ending to Arsene Wenger's spell at the club.

Only time will tell.
