After everyone which has happened this season, through the injuries and broken relationships, Kawhi Leonard's future with the San Antonio Spurs remains unclear, especially since he has a chance to opt out of his current contract in 2019.

The biggest question will be whether or not if the Spurs want to continue with him at the franchise. There's a strong chance that they do, but even then, he's not a lock to stay in San Antonio, as he could opt not sign a contract extension this summer and leave as an unrestricted free agent the following year.

It would be a devasting blow for the Spurs if they were to lose Leonard next year, which is why if he was to not accept a contract extension, they'll look to trade him away. In order to avoid that possibility though, the franchise will try to repair their broken relationship with their star forward.

One side of the broken relationship is the Spurs' problems with Kawhi and how he has handed his quad injury which he has been dealing with for almost the entire season, spending a significant time away from the team rehabbing it.

As for the two-time All-Star, his problem, according to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News, is that he wants his head coach, Gregg Popovich, to lighten his practice load.

Isola has revealed that one executive said to him: “Don’t you have to sign him. From what I understand, he wants (Gregg) Popovich to lighten up a little with practice and tweak some things. The Spurs may not want to change their ways, but this is Kawhi Leonard we’re talking about.”

It's not out of the ordinary for star players to use their leverage to decrease their practice time. If there's any coach willing to listen to their players as well when it comes to trying to keep them at a franchise, it's Popovich.

It was only last summer that LaMarcus Aldridge requested a trade away from the Spurs because he was unhappy with his offensive role. Sure enough, Popovich changed the offense for Aldridge, and while his contract still expires next summer, there's now a better chance he signs a new deal with the team.

Popovich and the Spurs will be hoping that Leonard does the same, but it looks like they might have to reduce his practice time in order to make that happen.
