After 22 years in charge, Arsene Wenger has at most six games left as the manager of Arsenal.

The 68-year-old’s first match since the announcement of his imminent departure saw the Gunners win 4-1 over West Ham last weekend, but the good times didn’t quite roll on.

Wenger watched his side come away from the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid with a 1-1 draw, despite the visitors playing with ten men for much of the evening.

It was a hugely disappointing result given the circumstances and a telling reminder of why some Arsenal fans are so eager to start fresh start under a new manager next season.

While the prestige of the Emirates job has attracted a spread of high-profile suitors, one name stands out as the favourite to succeed Wenger.

Luis Enrique – who’s been out work since parting ways with Barcelona expired in March last year – is thought to be the most likely candidate to take over once the Frenchman steps down.

The treble-winning tactician expects to earn the same £9 million annual salary Wenger has pocketed in recent seasons, but his demands extend beyond personal terms.

According to the Sun, Enrique wants £200 million to fund a major overhaul of the current Arsenal squad, with only two players thought to be safe from the axe.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette won’t be up for sale, which is hardly a surprise considering the £100 million duo both arrived within the last 12 months.

That means every goalkeeper, defender and midfielder at Arsenal should count themselves as expendable if Enrique agrees a deal with the north London club.

ENRIQUE'S FIRST TRANSFER TARGET

In terms of players coming the other way, Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan has already been marked as a key transfer target.

If that’s anything to go by, Enrique would certainly bring a more aggressive transfer policy to what the Emirates faithful have grown accustomed to during the last two decades under Wenger.

Whichever manager is tasked with filling his shoes next term, there’s no question they will have an enormous challenge on their hands.
