Kimi Raikkonen cut a frustrated figure after seeing another opportunity to claim pole position slip through his fingers in qualifying for the Azerbaijan GP on Saturday. The 2007 world champion has arguably been the faster of the two Ferrari drivers in 2018, regularly featuring ahead of teammate Sebastian Vettel. However, that only hasn't been the case when it has really mattered with the German taking pole in Bahrain and China by tiny margins and assuming the lead driver role in the races. In Baku though, Raikkonen looked to have his best chance yet with an excellent first two-thirds of the lap and Vettel not improving his time until disaster struck at Turn 16, effectively the final corner."It was a f***-up," he said accepting the blame. "A mistake. It cost us quite a few places so not the greatest end."No issues, I took it easier even on the entry because obviously it's been a bit trickier with the wind all day."I don't know, it just got sideways, I got it back but I knew already it was all gone because it's flat out and a long straight [to complete the lap]."

The result would be Raikkonen not improving and staying sixth on the grid for Sunday's race, as well as inadvertently helping Daniel Ricciardo by offering a slipstream along the 2.2km kinking main straight.

That would allow the Australian, who is being widely tipped to replace the 38-year-old next season, to jump into fourth ahead of Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen.

It was also indicative of a slightly messy session for the Ferrari driver despite his rapid pace.

In Q2, Kimi locked his brakes twice and wasn't able to make the top 10 on the Supersoft tyre which he would then start the race on, instead, he would switch to the less durable Ultrasoft to ensure a place in Q3.

Asked how he felt about his inability to produce the perfect lap so far this year, he added: "I've been a few times disappointed.

"This is a different story and today, what can you do? I can only look in the mirror. It's painful."
