Real Madrid certainly prioritised their second-leg Champions League game v Bayern Munich this weekend.

Los Blancos welcomed Leganes to the Bernabeu, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos being rested, but they still managed to grind out a 2-1 win to keep their hopes of finishing second alive.

It seems strange saying that Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema were brought in to cover Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio, but that's what is happening at Madrid these days.

And Bale managed to score the opening goal of the game, with highly-rated youngster Borja Mayoral getting the second.

Leganes managed to pull one back, which inadvertently contributed to a chaotic end to the match.

In the dying seconds of injury-time, Leganes were on the attack, but they were brought to a sudden halt by the referee's whistle just as they were about to have a shot.

He then rubbed salt in the wounds by sending off Gabriel Pires for his protests.

Not often you see this kind of thing in professional football.

No wonder the players were absolutely fuming with the referee.

Luckily, the debacle will have little effect on Leganes' season, with the club's place in Spain's top-flight all but confirmed for next season - they need just one more point.

The incident was picked up by football fans on Twitter and they - like us - were pretty stunned.

FANS REACT

It may have been seven seconds over the designated two minutes, but most referee's would have let the player have his shot and then blew his whistle.

It also begs the question, why did he not just blow a few seconds before to save all the hassle?
