It's been a really strange season for Everton.

At the start of the campaign, the Toffees were one of the favourites for relegation after a disastrous run of form under Ronald Koeman and some dreadful spending from the Dutchman in the summer.

As is the case with a lot of Premier League teams in trouble, Everton called Sam Allardyce to get them out of a sticky situation and he has done just that.

The Toffees now sit eighth in the table and would be as high as fifth if it was based on results after Allardyce's arrival - they'd be ahead of Arsenal.

Nevertheless, fans are just as unhappy as they were under Koeman, with boos being aimed at the manager during the Huddersfield game on Saturday despite a 2-0 win.

They want him out and it turns out if he is shown the exit door, he may be followed by Wayne Rooney.

England's record goalscorer only returned to the club in the summer, but a report from the Mirror says that Everton will listen to offers for him in the upcoming transfer window.

And what the club's coaching staff have said about Rooney really sums up how far his career has fallen in recent years.

They write: "That includes sanctioning the sale of Rooney after fewer than 12 months at the club.

"It was theatre impresario Kenwright who brought Rooney back to the club from Manchester United last summer.

"But the gamble has misfired, with the Everton coaching staff believing that, despite the player’s commitment, Rooney’s impact at the age of 32 has not fulfilled expectations."

Ouch. He may be getting on in years, but the sharp decline in his form of late is a real concern, one which Everton's team cannot really put up with for much longer.

He looks lost in central midfield and with Cenk Tosun scoring goals, Rooney has no chance of playing up front for the Toffees.

Surely a move to the MLS or Chinese Super League beckons in the summer?
