Neutrals must be disappointed Real Madrid haven’t engaged in their customary tussle with Barcelona for the La Liga title this season.A rocky start to the campaign was compounded by a disastrous run between November and the end of 2017 in which Los Blancos claimed 12 points from a possible 24.Perhaps even more significantly, the Santiago Bernabeu was forced to watch Real succumb to a 3-0 battering at the hands of their arch-rivals, who currently boast a 12-point gap over them. It’s not all bad for Zinedine Zidane and his men, though. They’re on track for a third-straight Champions League crown – a feat last pulled off by their semi-final opponents Bayern Munich between 1974 and 1976.The hope of realising such achievements is probably what’s maintaining a sense of positivity throughout the Madrid camp at this stage of the season.Marcelo appears to be enjoying himself more than most if his outrageous touch against Bayern on Wednesday is anything to go by.While the Brazilian full-back’s nonchalant technique of trapping a lofted pass with the sole of his boot was brilliant, he’s produced something even more special in training. With a pass coming his way from behind, Marcelo got the attention of Mateo Kovacic before watching where his teammate’s eyes looked in order to trap the ball.Thankfully, it was captured on video – and fans on Twitter are scratching their heads over how he did it.

Sublime, really.

As if it wasn’t already blatant enough, this further emphasises how Marcelo playing at full-back could be viewed as something of a waste.

Imagine what the Brazilian could do if he didn’t have to worry about helping to keep the Madrid back four intact.

He might well enjoy a more advanced role later in his career, but for now, let’s just enjoy the occasional flashes of brilliance he offers in training and on the pitch (it doesn’t seem to matter which for him).
