For the second consecutive pay-per-view, Finn Balor was unable to get one over on Seth Rollins to become the new Intercontinental Champion.

At WrestleMania, The Kingslayer managed to overcome The Miz and the Irishman to leave the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana as the new champion. Then, as the matches slowly started to be announced for the Greatest Royal Rumble event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, fans had their theories on how the results could play out.

GREATEST ROYAL RUMBLE

The biggest two titles in question were the Intercontinental and United States Championships, held by Rollins and Jeff Hardy respectively heading into the Middle East.

There was always the chance that a win for Jinder Mahal could see the United States title head over to Monday Night RAW, while a win for The Miz or Samoa Joe could see either man bringing the Intercontinental Championship to SmackDown LIVE.

Neither of those outcomes came to fruition, but Balor did come agonisingly close to taking the victory in the Fatal 4-Way ladder match with nobody there to stop him. Then, Rollins leapt from the top rope onto the ladder and managed to retrieve his title right in front of Balor’s face who was unable to do anything about it.

His face, though, spoke volumes. He was in utter disbelief that Rollins pretty much stole the win right out of his hands. According to Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer, this key loss could trigger a character change for the first-ever Universal Champion.

With Balor not hiding his look of disappointment and coming close yet again, Alvarez claimed on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Live that this could be the start of something more for Balor, such as a change of heart and turning heel at last.

HEEL TURN?

According to Ringside News, he said: “The only thing that I can figure is that Finn Balor is going to turn heel.

“That’s the only thing that makes sense here. I don’t know if it’s going to happen, we’ll find out. But that is what I have determined after seeing what a geek they made that guy look like in that match.”

Alvarez also stated that it should have been The Miz in that spot, as he clearly wants the record and seeing it snatched away from him would have made more sense, unless the aim is to have Balor turn heel after coming up short too many times.

However, with Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows now on the blue brand, it will be interesting to see how a potential heel turn for Balor would work out without anyone by his side.
