To say Graeme Souness lost his rag with Granit Xhaka at half-time of Manchester United v Arsenal would be putting things mildly.

The Swiss midfielder certainly made an impact on Arsenal's game at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, both for positive and negative reasons.

Xhaka was handed the captain's armband for the day and, just 16 minutes into the game, came in for criticism as United opened the scoring via Paul Pogba.

He would go onto redeem himself somewhat with an assist for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but his first-half clanger really won't age well.

Not only did the 25-year-old lose the ball in midfield but he was put on his backside by Pogba, stood statuesque in the penalty area as United scored and then proceeded to adjust his shin pads.

Souness destroys Xhaka

You've got to credit him for tracking back, yet his rash defending and penalty box laziness did not go down well with Arsenal fans.

Even the angriest of Gooners didn't go as far as Souness, though, who dropped a truth bomb upon Xhaka that even left Thierry Henry shocked.

The Liverpool legend stated: "It's kid-on football. It's ridiculous.

"You've got to stand up, don't sell yourself as simple as that. That is for the TV cameras and people sat in row Z to show them he's having a real go. It's kid-on football.

Thierry Henry was stunned

"I'm sorry, but it's more of the same from Arsenal. That guy is 25-years-old, he's been at Arsenal two years, is that the first time he's done that in a game? No, does it do in training? Yes.

"Why does no one point it out to him? He's cost them that goal.

"You [Thierry Henry] said it's not been the worst Arsenal performance, well it's been like this for a decade.

"When it comes to the critical things in the games, they're not professional, they need a couple of men to sort these things out.

"Who's pointing the finger at Xhaka, saying: 'you don't do that, stay on your feet you fool!'

"They're naive and it's the basics of football.

"I would have done that once at Liverpool, I could have got away with that once at Liverpool. I'd be sat on the bench until I learned that."

Wow.

Pundits are occasionally guilty of playing neutral during big games, but you can't make that accusation against Souness.

He probably went a little too far at times yet the amateurish nature of Xhaka's defending could not be ignored.

If Souness ever returned to management, he certainly wouldn't be signing Xhaka in a hurry.
