Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon had an ‘end-of-season’ feel about it.This was Arsene Wenger’s final visit to Old Trafford as the Arsenal manager and, unlike the ferocious meetings of yesteryear, this one was all smiles and hugs prior to kick off.Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson both warmly embraced the outgoing Frenchman, who even received a gift from United. A classy gesture there from the Red Devils. The following 90 minutes were a little on the tepid side, although there was at least a dramatic ending.Former United winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan appeared to have secured a point for the Gunners with his 51st-minute equaliser, which cancelled out Paul Pogba’s first-half opener, but Marouane Fellaini popped up in stoppage time to snatch all three points for the hosts.Up in the gantry, providing additional analysis for Sky Sports throughout the match, was the former Liverpool and England midfielder Jamie Redknapp.Because he’s an ex-Liverpool player, Redknapp is hardly the most popular pundit with Man Utd fans anyway, but the 44-year-old was torn apart on social media for a comment he made during the second half.

What Redknapp said in the second half

Mourinho had not long brought on Marouane Fellaini for Jesse Lingard, his third and final substitution of the afternoon, when Sky cut to Redknapp to offer his opinion. Redknapp couldn’t believe it and thought it was a complete waste leaving Mata on the bench.

He said: “I’m just thinking about Man Utd from their point of view. The game’s going nowhere at the moment and that little fella there, Juan Mata, what must he be thinking? ‘I’m a creative brain, I need to be on this field to make a difference’.

“I get the tactic, and the tactic is No. 27, Fellaini, chasing the ball and if they stick it in the box, they might get a knockdown for a header and it works, it’s a Mourinho tactic that’s worked many, many times in the past throughout all his teams.

“But when you want a player at Old Trafford that’s got that little bit of class and quality that can unlock the door - he’s not even getting warmed up. I don’t know what United fans must think but I don’t get it.”

United fans have destroyed him on Twitter

Oh dear, Jamie.

It was Fellaini who scored the all-important winning goal, effectively securing United a top-four finish in the process, justifying Mourinho’s decision to send him on in place of Mata.

United fans, who thought Redknapp was unaware that Mourinho had already made all three subs, couldn’t help but mock the former Liverpool player on Twitter as soon as Fellaini’s goal went in.

It just shows why Mourinho is in the dugout and Redknapp is up in the gantry.

Maybe next time he’ll think twice before doubting Jose.
