Manchester United narrowly came through their Premier League clash against Arsenal at Old Trafford, although it was not in the manner that they would have hoped.

Arsene Wenger named a weakened side on Sunday afternoon with the intentions of resting key players for their crucial Europa League tie against Atletico Madrid on Thursday.

Therefore, it was expected that Man United would cruise to an easy victory.

But that was not the case.

The home side got off to a fantastic start when Paul Pogba netted after 16 minutes, but they could not extend their lead.

In fact, it looked as if the game would end in a draw after Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a fine goal against his former side six minutes after half-time.

Jose Mourinho sent on Marouane Fellaini in a desperate attempt to find a winner, and the Belgian managed to fulfil his manager's wishes as he headed home in stoppage time.

It was not a vintage performance from Man United but they would undoubtedly have been happy to emerge victorious.

That was the view adopted by Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean admitted that he was happy with the win, but that Man United must improve in order to win titles next season.

"Happy for the win," he wrote. "But for next season, if we want to fight for the premier league and the champions and everything that comes, we must keep improving because we are the MANCHESTER UNITED 💪🏽 ALL TOGETHER FAMILY."

Spot on, Alexis.

Mourinho's side were lucky to walk away from Old Trafford with the three points.

Arsene Wenger handed a debut to a 20-year-old centre-back, whilst also giving starts to inexperienced players such as Ashley Maitland-Niles and Reiss Nelson.

But Man United failed to win convincingly. In fact, it could be argued that they were lucky to emerge victorious.

It was a good result, but as Sanchez says, in order to win trophies next season they need to continue to improve.

Their performance against Arsenal only emphasises that point.

MOURINHO THINKS THEY DESERVED THE WIN

Mourinho also admitted that Man United's performance was not of a high level, but he did state his belief that they deserved to win.

"I don't think we played especially well," he admitted. "I think the fact they made a few changes didn't help us from the mental point of view. There was less responsibility for them and our team was a little bit more relaxed.

"However, in the last 20 minutes we showed that we wanted to win. We changed the game in the direction where it was more to difficult for them to cope with it and I think, because of the last push, we deserved to win."
