Fernando Torres will leave Atletico Madrid at the end of the season as a club legend.

It will be the second time Torres had parted ways with his boyhood club with the 34-year-old’s contract set to expire this time around.

At this late stage of his career, Torres’ next move isn’t clear.

But when he left the club back in the summer of 2007, the Spaniard aimed to conquer the Premier League.

Torres had already established himself as an Atleti hero, having captained the side at the age of 19.

But he hit new levels following his £20 million to Liverpool.

He scored 81 goals in 142 appearances at Anfield, establishing himself as one of the best strikers in world football.

WHAT TORRES SAID AFTER PLAYING AT ANFIELD

And his confidence was sky high at Liverpool.

Torres confirmed as much in a recent interview on the 'Universo Valdano' program of beIN LaLiga, per Marca.

He recalled making his Anfield debut against Chelsea - a match in which he scored - and remembered what he said to Pepe Reina following his home debut.

"I remember the first game at Anfield against Chelsea, I did not hear anything, the atmosphere was spectacular, Pepe Reina came and said: 'Look, this is what I was talking about, it's what you deserve, so enjoy.' In the second game I said: 'Pepe, I think that in this field I will score in every game, everything is perfect.’”

So, thanks to the atmosphere at Anfield, Torres went into every home game thinking he would score.

And more often than not, he did.

That confidence only lasted three-and-a-half seasons on Merseyside before a very controversial switch to Chelsea.

And Torres didn’t look anywhere near the same player at Stamford Bridge, managing 45 goals in 172 matches during his spell.

He might look back on his career with regret at swapping Liverpool with Chelsea although he did win the FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League with the Blues.

But there’s no doubt he played the best football of his career at Liverpool and it seems the crowd at Anfield had something to do with it.
