Steven Gerrard may be close to his first big managerial gig.

After doing a brilliant job with Liverpool's U18 side this season, the Reds legend is now in the frame to become the new manager of Rangers.

With Graeme Murty being sacked on Monday, it's looking more likely with each passing day.

Rangers look set to finish third in the Scottish Premier League after being humiliated by Celtic 5-0 on Sunday, with a lot of people making Gerrard aware of the size of the task at hand.

Former Scotland international Kris Commons thinks it will take around £70m to fix the Glasgow club.

“If I was Steven Gerrard looking at that squad, and baring in mind they have got five loan players to leave as well as players out of contract and guys who are currently on loan abroad to come back, I’d be thinking this is a £50million, £60million, £70million project," he said.

“I’m talking transfer fees, wages, agents’ fees and a long-term process.

So why on earth would Gerrard want the job? Well, a report from the Daily Record and Duncan Castles goes quite a way to explaining that question.

They say sources close to Gerrard have told them that he is viewing a potential stint at Rangers as the perfect stepping stone to one day succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

The Ibrox is seen by Gerrard as the 'perfect environment' to prepare him for the Liverpool hot seat.

Castles says on his podcast: "Talking to some people close to Steven, the interesting guidance I was getting is that it's precisely because he wants to manage Liverpool in the future, that Rangers and the Old Firm is an attractive environment for him.

"He sees parallels between Liverpool and Glasgow as cities, with an intensity of football culture and an intensity of football rivalry that probably doesn't exist anywhere else in the UK."

Interesting. It's a very bold plan from Gerrard, one which really hinges on him being a success in Scotland.

Should Brendan Rodgers and Celtic humiliate him on a regular basis, he may find his path to the Liverpool job blocked off.
