The UFC has been having issues in the past several years with champions defending their titles on a more consistent basis.A prime example of this is the biggest star in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) - Conor McGregor. The Notorious One has won both the featherweight and lightweight crowns in the promotion, but has never defended a title.McGregor has since been stripped of both titles and to this day has never had a title defense in his UFC career.Back in June of last year the UFC stripped Germaine de Randamie of her women's featherweight title for refusing to defend it against Cris Cyborg. De Randamie cited Cyborg's history with abusing performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).It seems that the UFC could have another issue with getting one of their champions to defend their title. Nicco Montano won the inaugural women's flyweight title back in December by getting a unanimous decision over Roxanne Modafferi. Now, five months later, with former UFC women's bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko making her claim for a shot at the 125-pound crown - Nicco seems reluctant to come to the negotiation table. With only a record of 4-2 in her MMA career, MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani reports that the UFC is losing patience with the 29-year-old who won't commit to fighting Shevchenko. Here's what he had to say:"UFC is losing patience with Nicco Montaño."As I reported last week, the plan was for her to defend the 125 title against Valentina Shevchenko in Calgary but they are having a hard time getting a commitment from her."While it’s not scrapped, they are now looking at other options."One of of those options, as @bokamotoESPN reported last night, is Alvarez v. Poirier 2 but based on the conversations I’ve had,"I’d categorize those talks as preliminary at this point. Some hurdles, most notably Alvarez’s contract situation. He has one fight left.

One fan said what most MMA fans are thinking at this moment - which is that Montano's circumstances look a lot like what happened with De Randamie last year. This was Helwani's response to that:

"It is reminiscent of that, yes. I’ve tried to reach out to her several times and have not heard back either."

What are your thoughts on Montano refusing to commit to a fight against Shevchenko to defend her title? Do you think the fight will ultimately be made? And who are you picking in the potential match-up? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments section below!
