Real Madrid are through to the Champions League final for a third-consecutive season following Tuesday night's 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich.

Karim Benzema's brace - his first goals since late March - cancelled out strikes from Joshua Kimmich and James Rodriguez to secure a 4-3 victory on aggregate at the Bernabeu.

It was a pulsating game that Bayern really ought to have won. Jupp Heynckes' side dominated from start to finish and let themselves down by individual errors.

For Benzema's second goal in the 46th minute, Corentin Tolisso played a risky back pass to goalkeeper Sven Ulreich to clear but he did nothing of the sort.

Ulreich appeared to be caught between two minds and ended up sliding and air kicking the ball, allowing Benzema to run past him and slide the ball into an empty net.

No one can deny Bayern were the better side and speaking in his post-match press conference, Heynckes agreed that simple mistakes cost them the game.

"We are all very disappointed because the team played exceptionally tonight," he said. "I've just told the lads that I've never seen a Bayern team play as well as they did tonight in the Bernabeu.

BAYERN PUNISHED

"But at the highest level you cannot afford to make the mistakes that we did in the first leg and again tonight immediately after the break.

"These mistakes will be ruthlessly punished and then it's no wonder that you end up leaving the pitch as losers."

However, Bayern can also count themselves very unlucky after they were denied what looked a stonewall penalty just before half-time.

In the above video, Kimmich's cross is clearly blocked by Marcelo's outstretched arm before eventually going out for a corner.

Bayern's players were understandably furious at the decision - Jerome Boateng even tweeted about it during the game - and now Marcelo has reacted to the incident.

And what the Brazilian said deserves respect. In his own post-match interview, Marcelo refused to beat around the bush by saying it WAS a penalty and that Real got very lucky.

"It's a handball," he said. "It hit me on the hand and I think it's a penalty. If I say it didn't hit me I'd be lying, but football is like that.

"I don't talk about referees, but it's clear that sometimes they make decisions in your favour and other times against you, but whatever happens you have to play football."

Fair play to Marcelo, not many players would admit to committing handball after such an important game. It was unintentional, but he knows a penalty should have been awarded to Bayern.
