Liverpool are just 90 minutes away from the Champions League final. The Reds will take on Roma in the second leg of their semi-final tie at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday evening, comforted by a 5-2 advantage from the first meeting.Only a collapse of epic proportions will prevent Liverpool from setting up a clash against Real Madrid in Kiev on May 26.Much of the focus leading into the match has focused on Liverpool supporters and their safety in Rome.Last week’s meeting at Anfield was marred by an incident involving Liverpool fan Sean Cox, who was attacked by Roma Ultras outside the stadium before kick-off.Liverpool are understandably keen to ensure those who have travelled to Italy are safe and steps have been taken to try to prevent any similar attacks this week. The club have issued a statement offering advice to fans in Rome, which is a pretty sad decision to have to make.

Liverpool's statement

The most astonishing line in the statement is the one that tells fans not to walk to the stadium, and to use a shuttle bus instead.

“Supporters are strongly advised to use the available shuttle buses to the stadium… Under no circumstances should supporters attempt to walk to the Stadio Olimpico,” it reads.

The idea that fans shouldn’t walk to a stadium, for their own safety, is simply incredible.

Liverpool have also told their fans to expect to be held inside the Stadio Olimpico for a long time, with The Times even reporting that they may have to wait until 1am to be let out.

Plenty of reaction

Many fans and journalists have expressed their bewilderment at the statement, which you can read in full HERE.

Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan writes: “Imagine: ‘Under no circumstances should supporters attempt to walk to OT/Anfield/Etihad etc..’”

You just can’t imagine it, can you?

Ed Malyon, the Independent’s sports editor, wonders whether Roma should be allowed to host the match given the safety concerns.

He raises an interesting point. How can Roma legitimately claim to provide a safe experience to all the fans hoping to attend?
