No matter who you support, you're probably a fan of Fernando Torres.

During his career, El Nino has endeared himself to football fans across the world with his performances with Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea and beyond. Simply put, he was the world's finest number nine at the peak of his powers between 2007 and 2009.

Sadly, things never worked out for Torres after a last-ditch attempt at fitness for the 2010 World Cup that prompted a rushed knee operation which took away that extra stride of pace.

Guillem Balague, a personal friend to Torres, revealed last month: "Before the 2010 World Cup, he had his knee operated on. The cartilage. At the time, he said: 'I want to do it because I want to get to the World Cup' and he of course was a regular in the line-up with David Villa too.

"Afterwards I think he felt sorry for having it done because it did affect his performances, especially his pace."

Torres leaving Atletico this summer

"After 2010 things were difficult for him. Little by little, time caught up with him and the move to Chelsea was pushed by what he considered 'lies' from Liverpool which later on proved to be lies."

His doomed Chelsea spell came to an end in 2015 and, after a loan spell with AC Milan, he eventually returned to the club that made him - Atletico.

Torres' return to the Wanda Metropolitano has been punctuated by mediocrity, however, and after four seasons, club and player are parting ways for a second time.

Torres: 'For the benefit of the club'

It's a sad moment for the man himself and his explanation for the departure on Thursday was bordering on heartbreaking.

As per The Sun, Torres explained: "I will always put Atletico before me, they are the most important thing to me.

"My biggest dream has always been to play here and that is when I was a child and grown up, it is what I wanted most.

"This is the second time I have had to give that up and both times have been for the benefit of the club, and I would do it a third time and a fourth.

"This club means everything to me and they will always be in my heart.”

Oh, Fernando.

Torres has now been linked with moves to the United States and China as his career looks to enter its twilight months at the age of 34.

It's a sad tale for such a loveable player and no more so when it concerns the club he holds so dearly.

No matter where Torres' career takes him now, though, football fans will always fondly remember the blonde goal-scoring machine from 2007-08.
