Rangers are ready to take a big gamble. The Scottish giants presumably want Gerrard for three reasons: his hunger to prove himself, his knowledge of the game and his status as an icon of the Premier League era.Gerrard, unlike somebody like Murty, will attract players - both promising and experienced - to play for Rangers. The 37-year-old never managed to get his hands on the Premier League trophy but still performed magnificently for Liverpool in England’s top division during his 17 years at Anfield. There’s a reason why he made the PFA Premier League Team of the Year on eight occasions.

Barton's tweets from 2013

Although most football fans will concur that Gerrard is one of the greatest players of the Premier League era, Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t see it that way. The Manchester United legend famously said in his controversial 2013 autobiography: “I'm one of the few who felt Gerrard was not a top, top player.”

This quote prompted an interest response from the outspoken Joey Barton, who will take charge of Fleetwood Town this summer, on Twitter at the time.

Barton clearly thought Fergie was talking nonsense and didn’t hold back with his tweets. In fairness, it’s still hard to believe that Gerrard wasn’t regarded as a truly great player in Ferguson’s eyes.

Barton then revealed that, in his opinion, Gerrard was a far superior midfielder to former United captain Roy Keane.

Was Gerrard better than Keane?

The former Manchester City and Newcastle United star played against both midfielders, so he’s in a better position than most of us to judge.

However, Gerrard’s trophy haul pales in comparison to Keane’s.

The fiery Irish midfielder inspired the Red Devils to seven Premier League titles during his illustrious career.

But Barton and others feel Gerrard still had the edge.
