FIA race director Charlie Whiting has spoken about reports of Sebastian Vettel driving dangerously during a Safety Car restart early on in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend.

Lewis Hamilton had complained about the safety of Vettel's driving during the restart in last weekend's race, saying that the German Ferrari driver 'accelerated and slowed a number of times.'

As race director, it's Whiting's role to decide if a driver should be penalised for such offences under a Safety Car restart.

He says that Hamilton had made such a complaint, but felt it wasn't worthy of such action to be taken.

“I think [Vettel] controlled it very well but it’s up to the leading driver to say when we go,” Whiting said.

“Unlike some other series, they have an acceleration zone, a place where you can accelerate. You can’t do it before or after that. Once it goes green, the Safety Car comes into the pits, it’s up to the leader to decide when he is going to go.

“[Baku] is a tricky place – they catch the Safety Car too early if they go too quickly.

"I think Seb controlled it well.

"There was a bit of a complaint from Lewis that he wasn’t going at a constant rate, but if you look down the field, there’s a few places where that happens. To expect them to go at one speed doesn’t happen. So long as no one does anything dangerous, we’re happy.”

It isn't the first time these two drivers have been involved in such incident either.

It was only last year at the same race when the pair made contact ahead of a Safety Car restart when Vettel had crashed into the back of Hamilton, before driving alongside the Mercedes and what appeared at the time to be the German deliberately turning into Hamilton.

The tension was high back then, with Vettel claiming that Hamilton had tried to 'break test' him. The outcome of last year's events wasn't as lucky for Vettel as it might have been this time around as he was given a 10-second time penalty.

Neither drivers agreed with the outcome then, and something suggests that Hamilton won't be happy with the decision this time around either.
