Brooks Koepka was bemoaning his own bad luck on Thursday, after an extremely unfortunate piece of fortune during the first round of the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship.

Koepka pulled his drive on the 18th hole towards the feared creek that sits on the left side of the fairway.

Initially, it looked like the reigning U.S. Open champion had got away with it as his ball came down on land safely away from the water.

Unfortunately, it bounced right into an empty lawn chair and remarkably trampolined into the creek - scroll down to see the video below.

The commentators were quick to mention that should a patron have been sitting in the seat, the ball would have been safe from the hazard.

Koepka went on to bogey the hole for a round of 72 (one-over). He currently sits five shots back of the clubhouse leaders and will need to shoot a low score on day two to get himself back into contention.

The 28-year-old American won his first major in 2017, claiming the U.S. Open title at Erin Hills, Wisconsin. His win tied him for the record of the lowest U.S. Open score at 16 under (tied with Rory McIlroy’s 2011 record).

Koepka has been plagued by a left wrist injury for the past 5 months which he discussed recently with Golf.com: “It hurt before Tiger’s event (The World Hero Challenge, in early December). We knew something was wrong. I got an MRI and it came up clean, but the image wasn’t very good.”

“They kind of messed it up. After playing Hawaii in January, I had another MRI which showed the tendon was barely hanging on. We went back to the doctor and found the ligaments were barely hanging on, as well. Recovery has been a lot longer than we thought, but it was probably worse than we first let on.”

It’s great to see Koepka back healthy and playing again but he will need some better luck if he hopes to win at Quail Hollow.
