How Jose Mourinho reacted after Marcus Rashford failed to pass to Anthony Martial

With Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez absent from the Manchester United side for their trip Brighton, it was the perfect opportunity for Marcus Rashford to impress.

With an FA Cup final at the end of the season, a couple of decent performances from the youngster could see him starting against Chelsea in a little more than two weeks time.

But to say he failed to take his opportunity would be an understatement.

Rashford struggled against Brighton and perhaps proved why Jose Mourinho doesn’t start him regularly.

But there was one moment in the first-half that infuriated the United fans – and their manager for that matter.

United started the match poorly but had a great chance to take the lead in the 26th-minute.

Rashford got himself into the penalty area and with Anthony Martial waiting for a pull-back, it looked as though United would take the lead.

However, Rashford inexplicably delayed before his attempted pass was blocked out for a corner.

Martial couldn’t believe it, the United supporters couldn’t believe and his manager, well, he couldn’t believe it.

And Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves revealed exactly how Mourinho reacted. At the next opportunity, Mourinho called Rashford over to the touchline and Shreeves revealed what happened.

“Jose Mourinho is furious at Marcus Rashford. He said: ‘Why didn’t you square it to Anthony Martial?’”

We doubt Rashford had an answer for him.

It wasn’t just Mourinho asking that very question though.

United fans on Twitter failed to understand Rashford’s stutter when a pass to Martial looked on.

Don’t be surprised to see Lukaku and Sanchez – if they’re fit – starting ahead of Rashford come May 19 at Wembley…
