Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was unveiled as Rangers manager on Friday afternoon.

The 37-year-old - who previously managed Liverpool's U18 team -  has got a major job on his hands, with the Gers currently third in the Scottish Premiership.

Rivals Celtic were crowned champions last weekend for the seventh consecutive season.

"It's magic for Scottish football," Ally McCoist told BBC Radio 5 live. "A global name like Steven Gerrard will create interest throughout the world."

The new Rangers boss will be going toe-to-toe with his former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who has achieved incredible success since joining Celtic in 2016.

Rodgers, 45, is on course to win an unprecedented double treble with Celtic - if they can beat Motherwell in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden later this month.

Gerrard will be desperate to bring Celtic's dominance to an end next season.

How Celtic and Rodgers will respond

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has explained that Rodgers will see Gerrard's arrival as a threat - and expects the Bhoys to spend heavily over the summer.

"The fact he [Gerrard] has the courage to take this job on and go head to head with Brendan shows he backs himself," said Chris Sutton in the Daily Record.

"Rodgers will see his old captain as a threat because that is only natural. And if Gerrard gets the better of him there would be a humiliation factor for the Celtic boss.

"Rodgers won’t want his former pupil coming to Scotland along with a guy he employed at Liverpool, Gary McAllister, and ruling the roost so Celtic might just go again.

"They have funds in the kitty and people shouldn’t underestimate what Celtic can do off the back of this Gerrard move. Rodgers will be doubly determined to put Gerrard and McAllister away extremely early."

The BT Sport pundit believes Celtic will splash the cash on the back of Gerrard's arrival.

Taking his first steps in senior football management, Gerrard will also need to be backed financially to have any hope of catching Celtic.

Asked at his press conference what he plans to do this summer, Gerrard simply replied: “We’ll strengthen.”

Rangers suffered humiliating 5-0 and 4-0 defeats to Celtic in April and will have to massively strengthen in order to compete.

Meanwhile, Rodgers had a message for Gerrard after he was appointed: "Welcome to the land of no sleep!"
