After 10 years in the Premier League, Stoke City have been relegated.

The Potters needed to avoid defeat against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon to keep their survival hopes alive but failed to do so in a demoralising 2-1 loss.

Xherdan Shaqiri  fired the home side into the lead, only for James McArthur and Patrick van Aanholt to bring about a comeback.

Palace's victory at the Bet365 Stadium secured their safety under Roy Hodgson, yet sent Paul Lambet and Stoke hurtling down to the Championship.

Stoke are still only three points deep into the relegation zone but the fact Swansea face Southampton on Tuesday means one of those teams will inevitably increase their tally, confirming Stoke's fall.

Stoke City have been relegated

Gary Lineker tweeted as the inevitable approached, noting: "After 10 years in the top flight it's pretty certain that @stokecity will be relegated from the Premier League. Hope it's not for too long."

It was confirmation of what has been a terrible campaign for Stoke.

Despite impressive finishes in the Premier League under Mark Hughes, his fifth campaign in charge brought about a severe dip in form and Lambert's arrival in January was too little, too late.

Upon the confirmation of their relegation, Stoke sat with a terrible record of six wins, 14 draws and 16 defeats.

The news also brought about a rather unfortunate Twitter discovery.

Stoke's relegation ensured the video they posted to announce the signed of Jese Rodriguez back in August, cut an incredibly awkward sight. It didn't take long for fans and journalists to retweet the post and laugh with the benefit of hindsight.

The clip plays quotes from pundits and writers suggesting that Stoke were headed for the Championship and relegation in 2017-18, only for them to unveil Rodriguez as an almighty rebuttal to such rumours.

About that. Fast forward eight months, Rodriguez has left the club early and Stoke have been relegated.

Oh dear, check out the video below:

'This is why I think they'll be hurtling towards relegation.'

'Stoke fans, are you not concerned because I think you're hurtling towards the Championship.'

'I mean, what is the point in Stoke? Would the Premier League really miss Stoke City?'

Ouch, ouch, ouch.

The fact Stoke ridiculed those statements back in August certainly looks incredibly awkward now and no more so when you consider Rodriguez's poor spell at the club. And yes, that's in spite of the inspiring images of him hugging Cristiano Ronaldo.

So, it's now up to Stoke to plan for next season and plot a return to the Premier League.

They might want to think twice about going overboard with their Twitter videos in the future, though.
