The football world is sending prayers to Sir Alex Ferguson after the former Manchester United boss was admitted to hospital.
Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage, with Man United tweeting: “The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to aid his recovery.”
It’s awfully sad news and messages of support have quickly poured in.
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick wrote on Twitter: “Absolutely devastated to hear about Sir Alex being unwell in hospital. All my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Be strong Boss.”
Rivalries have been put to one side, with Manchester City and Arsenal also posting tributes on Twitter.
“Everyone at Manchester City wishes Sir Alex Ferguson a full and speedy recovery after his surgery #footballfamily,” Man City wrote.
Arsenal added: “We’re all thinking of you, Sir Alex.”
Liverpool's message
Liverpool have penned an article on their website and it’s a truly lovely read.
“The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Sir Alex Ferguson and his family following the news that the former Manchester United manager is ill in hospital,” the message says.
“A great rival but also a great friend who supported this club during its most difficult time, it is hoped that Sir Alex will make a full recovery.
“In the meantime, the club will offer its full support to Manchester United and also his family.”
Ferguson’s response to the Hillsbrough disaster in 1989 was class.
Man United played Liverpool in 2012, after a report into a cover-up in the aftermath of the awful disaster was published, and Fergie made sure his players carried themselves with class on that day.
“I was proud of my club the day we marked the publication of the Hillsborough report in 2012: a momentous week for Liverpool and those who had fought for justice,” Ferguson wrote in his autobiography.
“Whatever Liverpool asked for in terms of commemoration, we agreed to, and our hosts made plain their appreciation for our efforts.
“I told my players that day – no provocative goal celebrations, and if you foul a Liverpool player,
pick him up.”
He truly is a wonderful character.
