Michael van Gerwen was once again on stunning form as he captured the European Darts Grand Prix title in Sindelfingen. The Dutchman averaged over 103 in each of his four games en route to the final, as he overcame Alan Tabern, Darren Webster, Dave Chisnall and Michael Smith.Van Gerwen played James Wade in the final itself, and the Englishman could do nothing as the world number one romped to a 8-3 victory while averaging just shy of 111.The 29-year-old arguably played his best match of the tournament in the semi-finals against Michael Smith.Smith has been on great form recently, having recently secured his place at the O2 for Premier League finals night. But Van Gerwen whitewashed him 7-0 in their semi-final in Germany. Ouch. And what Van Gerwen did to win his fifth leg was extremely cheeky.MVG rattled off two consecutive 140s to start the leg, before hitting a 171 to leave 50 after nine darts. The conventional route, and the route professional darts players would go down 99.9% of the time, would be to hit a single number with their first dart before going for a double with the second. But Van Gerwen is no ordinary darts player. The 29-year-old instead decided to go straight for bull in what was an exhibition type shot, and Van Gerwen being Van Gerwen, he took it out.

The audacity.

Michael Smith took it in good spirits as he gave his opponent a fist bump for his efforts, while also shaking his head and smiling in disbelief.

The commentators also seemed in shock as Van Gerwen pulled off something that is very rarely attempted on the professional circuit, let alone executed.

Van Gerwen was also praised by those watching the event on social media.

VAN GERWEN: ‘MY BEST EVER TOURNAMENT’

The 29-year-old admitted after that this had been his ‘best ever tournament’.

“I think that was my best ever tournament,” said the Dutchman.

“To average over 110 for three games in a row is special, what more can I do?

“Other players always push me, and I have to do something special to win these games.

“James is back on track and playing consistently well again. He pushed me all the way especially at the start of the game.”
