It seems Gianluigi Buffon still hasn’t decided whether or not he will call time on his illustrious career at the end of the season.

The legendary goalkeeper is nearing the end of his 23rd campaign in senior football with spells at both Parma and Juventus.

Buffon previous stated that he would retire unless Juve won the Champions League.

Of course, the Old Lady crashed out of the competition in the quarter-finals after conceding a late penalty against Real Madrid - something that angered Buffon so much that he was sent off for his protests.

But just because Juve aren’t going to win the Champions League, it doesn’t necessary mean Buffon will be retiring.

“I have nothing to add. We’ll talk in a few days, after I have met with the President (Andrea Agnelli),” Buffon has said after being asked about his future.

One thing is for sure, it’s been a tough season for Buffon.

BUFFON HAS HAD A DIFFICULT SEASON

Juve’s Champions League heartbreak, coupled with Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup after a playoff defeat to Sweden has left Buffon feeling rather philosophical.

“It has certainly been an emotionally complicated year, that is undeniable, because it started too early to then have to strength to deal with everything that happened rationally,” said Buffon.

“Even recently, I would wake up every morning, look at myself in the mirror and then looking down at my feet say: either you are the strongest in the world or you are the most scummy, awful person in the world, because to stand here after everything that happened is not something everyone can handle.

“I still haven’t answered that question to myself. I still need to figure out if I am more strong or scummy. We’ll see.”

But when the 40-year-old finally hangs up his gloves - whether that’s this summer or in the years to come - he’ll look back on his career with pride.

In fact, some might claim he’s the greatest goalkeeper to have ever played the game.

But who are the best players he’s played against during his lengthy career?

Well, when asked that question was put to him, Buffon immediately reeled off three names.

"I have faced great players, I can not remember them all but Messi, Cristiano and Ronaldo are probably the best three who challenged me during my career,” Buffon answered.

For now, though, Buffon will just be hoping to finish the season with yet another domestic double with Juventus.

They’re on the verge of winning Serie A again and face AC Milan in the Copa Italia final on Wednesday.

He might have just 270 minutes left of his career but could well win two more trophies in that time...
