Player to make 50 appearances

Ashley Young, who has filled in superbly at left-back this season, is set to turn 33 in July but Mourinho believes he can play more than 50 times next season.

“When I arrived, he [Young] was playing a few matches per season,” said Mourinho to MUTV. “For the last couple of seasons, lots of injuries, lots of doubts, lots of question marks about his future at the highest level.

“In two years, we managed to have him, even with the important injury he had at the end of last season, but we had him for lots of matches, being important, probably going to the World Cup [with Gareth Southgate's England].

“I think he’s better now than he was two years ago. That’s the way I see things and, next year again, he will be an important member of our squad. If he’s now on 200, I hope, next season, he goes into the fifties.”

Man United fans not happy

Despite Young's excellent season, Reds supporters on social media were not too pleased with Mourinho's comments about Young.

Young has made 35 appearances for the Red Devils this season.

Mourinho's comments also doesn't sound like good news for Luke Shaw, who has repeatedly been criticised by the former Chelsea manager.

Man United are currently 17 points adrift of rivals Manchester City - and Mourinho will need to make some major changes if they're to challenge next season.

They've been heavily linked to left-backs Danny Rose, Alex Sandro and Ryan Sessegnon.

Young appeared to win over Man United supporters filling in at left-back but they obviously don't think he's good enough to be anything more than a back-up next season.

“I can’t say anything bad about the club,” Young told Jim White on talkSPORT. “I’ve been there now seven years so it’s been fantastic for me.

“The trophies I’ve managed to win there as well.

“I’m getting on a bit, I’m 33 in July.

"For me I’ve still got that winning mentality and that desire and that hunger to go and win more trophies as I did when I was 21.

“I’ve still got that belief that I can still do a job when called upon and whenever the manager calls upon me, I go out there and give 100 per cent and try and win as much as I can.”
