Dutchman Max Verstappen admits that the upcoming Spanish GP will be a "defining moment for the season" for Red Bull, as teams bring a plethora of upgrades to Barcelona.

In the first race of the European season, all 10 teams will bring their largest updates of the season to improve their cars following the opening four races.

The Red Bull car has provided encouraging performances so far this season, but two double retirements in Bahrain and Azerbaijan mean the team sit third in the Constructors' Championship - 55 and 59 points behind Mercedes and leaders Ferrari respectively.

But, Verstappen feels as though the latest set of upgrades will play a huge part in how the standings finish at the end of the season.

"It could be quite a defining moment for the season," Verstappen said. "I'm interested to see how everyone will perform.

"I believe our car is very fast, we still need a bit more top speed, but hopefully that will come."

After a difficult personal start to the season, Verstappen's chances of a title tilt hang on small margins.

Errors in Australia, Bahrain, and China have cost the Dutchman. Then, Verstappen and teammate Daniel Ricciardo collided in Azerbaijan as they battled for fourth, and the 20-year-old is now 52 points behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton.

"I am of course also looking forward to the weekend as I have good memories from my first F1 win there and I will be happy to start the European season," he said.

"Everybody has done a lot of laps in Barcelona, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the cars progress this year.

"We have many updates coming, hopefully they will be positive and we can be even closer to the front, but of course everybody else will also bring new parts."
