The rivalry between Celtic and Rangers should heat up next season following Gers appointment of Steven Gerrard as their new manager.

Gerrard, 37, will go head-to-head in the dugout with his former boss Brendan Rodgers.

"He [Gerrard] had incredible quality as a player and that level of professionalism is what made him great," said Rodgers after Rangers appointed him. "I'm sure he will take those attributes into his management.

"I am delighted for him because he has obviously had an incredible playing career, wanted to manage, wanted to coach and now he gets the opportunity to do that."

Celtic have enjoyed incredible domestic success under Rodgers - and have won each of the last seven Scottish Premiership titles.

They were crowned champions last week after thrashing third placed Rangers 5-0 in the Old Firm at Celtic Park.

Despite that, club chairman Dave King this week said that Rangers can bring the Hoops down “like a pack of cards” by winning one title.

Ally McCoist responds

The former Rangers striker said there is no need for King to be talking about their Old Firm rivals.

Speaking on BT Sport, McCoist said, as per the Scottish Sun: “No, not at all. With the greatest respect, he shouldn’t be mentioning Celtic.

“It should be all about Rangers coming off the Steven Gerrard thing.

“It should’ve been about how Rangers were going to move forward.

“Listen, I get it. Celtic are the benchmark and Celtic are the target for Rangers, and indeed everybody, to try and catch.

“But that said, I don’t think there was any need for him to mention Celtic.”

During the press conference, King also admitted that there was no fresh prospect of outside investment coming in.

McCoist was disappointed by this message and suggested that the Rangers fans would feel the same way.

He added: “I would’ve been happier if there were more investment coming in.

“I don’t know if it surprised me but it probably disappointed me a little bit, along with thousands and thousands of Rangers supporters.

“I think a lot of them felt there might’ve been more money available and there might’ve been outside investment coming in.”

It's clear that Gerrard will have an incredibly difficult job on his hands at Ibrox next season.
