Luke Shaw was handed a rare start by Jose Mourinho against West Ham on Thursday evening. The 22-year-old, who had only made 10 league appearances all season for Manchester United prior to this match, was one of several changes from the team that lost 1-0 away to Brighton and Hove Albion last week. This was another opportunity for Shaw to convince Mourinho that he’s determined to make a success of his Man Utd career. Another underwhelming performance would almost certainly result in his sale this summer.Mourinho and Shaw have rarely seen eye-to-eye since they began working together almost two years ago.Shaw’s current contract expires in 2019 and there’s a very real possibility that he will be sold and replaced this summer, just four years after sealing a £30 million move to Old Trafford from Southampton.United fans, by and large, are still optimistic that Shaw has the talent and potential to become the club’s first-choice left-back for years to come. But it’s patently clear that Mourinho doesn’t see it that way. He feels there’s plenty of room for improvement and has a problem with the England international’s attitude and footballing intelligence.

United fans are angry with what Mourinho did to Shaw

In his defence, Shaw has done everything that he can to win over Mourinho and has always said the right things in public. His performance levels haven’t always been up to scratch but that, you suspect, is partly down to his confidence being eroded away over the past two seasons.

Some Man Utd fans believe that Mourinho has an agenda against the young full-back - and that belief was further enhanced during the first half at the London Stadium. Per the Manchester Evening News’s Samuel Luckhurst, who was at the game, Mourinho issued Shaw with a “rollocking” after the defender had the audacity to fly forward and have a shot at goal.

United supporters on social media are fuming that Mourinho had a go at Shaw simply for getting forwards and helping out in attack.

You can understand why they’re perplexed with this.

Surely Shaw should be allowed to attack?

Mourinho should surely be encouraging his full-backs to get forward and help attack. That, after all, is the Manchester United way.

One of Shaw’s biggest assets is his ability to fly forward, so it seems bizarre why Mourinho would want to stifle that side of his game.

Perhaps it would have been a different story had United been playing at Old Trafford.

However, it’s yet another sign that the working relationship between the two men might be beyond repair.
