Arsene Wenger will take charge of his final Arsenal game on Sunday away at Huddersfield.

That contest will be the 1,235th game of his 22-year tenure at the London club. In that time he has led his team to victory in 706 occasions at a win rate of 57%.

He has also won 17 major honours for the club in that timeframe, ensuring he will go down as one of the, if not the greatest manager in Arsenal's history.

The club will now be focusing on the search for his successor.

Despite the Frenchman announcing he will be stepping down from his role three weeks ago, Arsenal have still not appointed a new manager.

ARSENAL WHITTLE DOWN SHORTLIST

But it is now believed that their shortlist now consists of just four names.

And it must be said, two of the names that feature can be considered a surprise.

The Manchester Evening News claim that Max Allegri and Luis Enrique, two names that have been heavily linked to the club, are still being considered.

Whereas those two have much experience in management, the other two do not.

As well as Allegri and Enrique, Mikel Arteta and Julian Nagelsmann are the other two names in contention.

The Manchester-based publication write that Arsenal are seriously considering the bold move of appointing a managerial novice, with Arteta believed to fit the bill.

The Spaniard is currently working at Manchester City as an assistant coach, a role which he has held since 2016.

But he has no further experience in management.

It is believed that Pep Guardiola is 'desperate' to keep Arteta at the club, but he could be powerless if Arsenal are to come calling.

Nagelsmann is another who has very little experience in management.

The German, who is just 30 years old, has been manager of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim since 2016.

He has been successful at the club, having led Die Kraichgauer to the Champions League in 2017; the first time the club have achieved that in their history.

They currently occupy fourth in the Bundesliga this campaign, and could confirm their place back in Europe's top competition with a win in their final league game against Dortmund on Saturday.

But given his inexperience, it would still be a huge surprise were Arsenal to choose him to succeed Wenger.

ROBERT PIRES THINKS PATRICK VIEIRA IS THE MAN

Robert Pires has reiterated his belief that Patrick Vieira is the right man for the job.

"We have a lot of candidates to replace Arsene Wenger and we can see the same names," Pires said.

"We talk about Allegri, Ancelotti, Luis Enrique… My two friends Patrick Vieira and Mikel Arteta too. I don't know who the next manager is for Arsenal but they need to find the right philosophy.

"They can't have the same philosophy as Arsene Wenger. My choice? If the board want a manager with a lot of experience, it's maybe someone like Luis Enrique or Ancelotti.

"But if they want to start with a new project, it's Vieira or Arteta. Comparing them, Patrick has a small advantage because he is doing very well with New York this season.

"Mikel is not a number one, although I think he has learned a lot under Pep Guardiola as he is one of the best managers.

"Patrick has a very good profile to replace Arsene Wenger. He spent nine seasons at Arsenal so he knows the club and the fans. I know some fans want to see him on the bench too."
