Aston Villa captain John Terry spoke about his future ambitions ahead of Saturday's Championship play-off tie against Middlesbrough.

The 37-year-old defender spent his whole career at Chelsea but left last summer after he wasn't offered a contract extension.

He was famously substituted in the 26th minute of his final home game as a Chelsea player.

Terry had offers to join a host of Premier League clubs but rejected them all in order to drop down to the Championship with Aston Villa.

"I didn’t want to play in the Prem," said Terry after leaving Stamford Bridge. "That was a big thing for me, I didn’t want to play against Chelsea."

"Playing against Chelsea just doesn't sit right with me, to be honest."

Terry previously wasn't sure what he would do if Aston Villa were promoted to the Premier League.

Terry on promotion

They still need to beat Boro and win the play-off final - but the Chelsea legend has revealed what he plans to do if Villa are promoted.

Terry has been brilliant at the back, making 32 league starts on their way to finishing fourth.

"I hope this isn't the end," the former England international told Villa's club website. "If we go up, I'm staying.

"And hopefully I can play for a few more years in the Premier League.

"It's only fair that if we go up, which is the belief within the group, that I stick around. It's in my contract when I hit a certain number of matches.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed it here and love the way I've been accepted. I had to perform to get the approval of the fans and the group, and it was a big call by the manager, too, to sign someone at 36 years of age and coming to the end of their career.

"The job isn't done yet. We've got a few more games to go. But hopefully I am here next season."

That will be very interesting - but there's still plenty of work to be done first.

If Aston Villa go up, we'll probably get to see Terry go head-to-head with the club he still adores.
