It was all going so well for Wayne Rooney at Everton, wasn't it?

After 13 years with Manchester United, the former England captain was welcomed back to Goodison Park amidst great fanfare this summer. It marked the return of the club's prodigal son and a talent that Toffees' fans wish they could have witnessed more often.

And Rooney didn't waste anytime impressing - scoring 10 goals in 16 Premier League games and even delivering a Goal of the Season contender against West Ham.

It looked like Rooney was rolling back the years but upon the turn of 2018, things have turned sour and the 32-year-old has neither a goal nor an assist to his name since December.

As a result, rumours have circulated that Rooney could leave Everton for a second time after just a single season and MLS side DC United have been touted as the frontrunners for his signature.

Allardyce questioned Rooney exit rumours

In fact, BBC Sport even reported on Thursday that Rooney had already agreed a deal in principal with the club.

So, it's all done and dusted, right? Well, that's not exactly the case and Sam Allardyce was quick to throw a spanner in the works by claiming that Rooney had told him nothing about his future.

Allardyce revealed in a press conference: "Let’s put this right, Wayne Rooney has not asked to leave.

Rooney has told teammates he's leaving

"And neither has Wayne Rooney had any confrontation with me or been in any difficult situation in the time since I’ve been here because we are two adults and we talk.”

However, findings by Sky Sources on Saturday seem to have settled the matter.

Sky Sports report that Rooney has definitively played his last game for Everton and even said goodbye to all of his teammates during a visit to Finch Farm.

Rooney was not set to train as he continues to recover from a knee injury but visited the complex between 10:00am and 12:40pm, telling numerous players and staff that he was leaving.

It would be safe to assume that Allardyce has been informed, too, less than 24 hours after he refuted claims Rooney had spoken to him.

As a result, it looks almost certain that the 32-year-old will be sporting a DC United jersey when he makes his comeback from injury.

It brings an abrupt end to what's been a glittering Premier League spell for England's all-time top scorer.

A final season with Everton was all the victory lap he wanted, though...
