There was a major shock at Old Trafford today when Rui Faria announced he would be leaving his post as assistant manager. The 42-year-old has worked with Jose Mourinho for the last 17 years, while being his number two at Man United for the past two seasons.“After a lot of consideration, and with a very heavy heart, I have decided the time is right for me to move on," Faria said after confirming he will be steeping down from the role.“I have had 17 years of incredible and unforgettable experiences. However, I have felt for some time that I would like to spend much more quality time with my family before pursuing any new challenge in my professional life.“My heartfelt thanks go to the manager, Jose Mourinho, for the belief he had in me, all those years ago, when it all was just a student dream. I would like to thank him for the opportunity and confidence, for the knowledge and experience, but most importantly for his friendship.“I would also like to thank Manchester United and all the clubs where I have had the privilege of working during this period."I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the staff and players who, in different ways, have made an important contribution to my growth as a person and as a professional.“I wish you all the best for the future, knowing that you will always be my close friends.”

MAN UNITED FANS HAVE THEIR SAY

Attention has already turned to who Jose Mourinho will bring in as number two.

And Man United fans are all mentioning the same name: Michael Carrick.

The midfielder will officially retire from football after Sunday's game at home to Watford.

He was already due to become a coach at the club after hanging up his boots, but fans are now tipping him to go one step further.

He lacks experience as a coach, but many think he will be an ideal replacement for Faria.

Whether Mourinho will want to go with someone more experienced remains to be seen.

But Man United fans are convinced that the 36-year-old has what it takes to make the step up.

ANDER HERRERA HAS HIS SAY ON CARRICK

Ander Herrera stated his belief that Carrick would make a fine coach earlier on Saturday.

"He's the right person to be an assistant as he's very calm and balanced," said Herrera.

"If you have one guy next to you like that it really helps you. It's one of the qualities he has that can make him a good manager in the future.

"He never gets crazy happy and in the bad moments he keeps his head and tries to give the right advice to the team. That's why I think he's going to be a good manager in the future."
