It's fair to say Victor Lindelof's first season at Manchester United could have gone better.

Signed amidst great fanfare last summer, the former Benfica centre-back looked the perfect man to partner Eric Bailly and deliver defensive solidity at Old Trafford.

Fast forward nine months, though, and he can't consistently break into the team he was tipped to walk into.

Lindelof has racked up 33 appearances this season, yet has only 13 Premier League starts to his name.

He recently impressed in the 2-1 win over Arsenal, being voted as the Red Devils' best performer, but few United supporters have sung his praise all season.

Tough first season for Lindelof

As a result, rumours have circulated that Lindelof could look for pastures new over the summer.

While a permanent exit would be rather over-the-top, it's been suggested that Lindelof could be sent out on loan for the 2018-19 campaign.

One recent report even suggested that the Swedish international could be sent out to make way for a sensational return for Jonny Evans.

Wolves want Lindelof on loan

It's important to remember that while Lindelof isn't young, he's still got a long way to go in his development at age 23 and a brief spell away from United could be just the solution to spur him on.

And it emerged on Saturday night that Lindelof could be set for a very surprising loan spell at that.

According to the Mirror, Championship winners Wolverhampton Wanderers are going to launch an extraordinary loan approach for the 23-year-old.

Nuno Espírito Santo is out to improve his defence ahead of a return to the Premier League and believes Lindelof would be the perfect man to bring to Molineux.

In return, the United man would be gaining valuable experience at the top of English football week in, week out.

Wolves have also been linked with the likes of Jack Wilshere and Yaya Toure recently with the Black Country club benefitting from their connections with super agent Jorge Mendes.

Whether or not United and Lindelof would agree to the move is unknown but there certainly looks to be benefits to the deal, even if it would raise a few eyebrows.

It's clear that something needs to change for the Swede at Old Trafford, if nothing else.

As for Wolves, it would be quite the statement ahead of their Premier League return.
