Vasyl Lomachenko made boxing history last night by claiming a world title in a third-weight division in only his 12th professional bout but pictures show that one of the tactics he used in the fight against Jorge Linares was particularly clever somewhat questionable.Eagle-eyed boxing commentator Chris Lloyd noticed something very interesting during the action-packed title fight at Madison Square Garden in New York.Lloyd posted on Twitter screenshots of Lomachenko stepping on his opponent's foot at various stages before unleashing a barrage of punches. He tweeted: "On a significant number of occasions, @VasylLomachenko locks Linares foot in place just before he opens up. It stops Jorge from getting out of range by a fraction of a second."A grey areas rule wise regarding intent, but it's masterful positioning nonetheless. #LomaLinares"It is within the rules of boxing to deploy such a tactic but some may feel it somewhat contravenes the spirit of the sport if the manoeuvre is used too frequently.

Lomachenko showed another side to his spectacular array of boxing skills in being able to position his feet and body in such a way to trap his frustrated opponent time and time again and stop him escaping the Ukranian's reach.

The fight itself was something of a classic with the double Olympic champion Lomachenko given a stern test by Linares, who defended his lightweight title with enormous courage and determination.

Indeed the Venezuelan was ahead on one of the judge's scorecards before a brutal left to the body from the Ukranian in the 10th saw him hit the canvas with the referee rushing in to call an end to proceedings.

Linares has demanded a rematch and we can be pretty certain that if he gets his wish, he shall be wiser to the nimble footwork of the 30-year-old Lomachenko who, in such a short space of time, has already assured his place in the pantheon of boxing greats.
