Lewis Hamilton was back at his brilliant best during this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, as the world champion converted another impressive pole into a dominant victory in Catalonia on Sunday.

The Mercedes driver was simply untouchable during the race, pulling out a good margin over main rival Sebastian Vettel within the first 10 laps before pacing himself to the finish as he eased to a second consecutive win.

It marks a huge turnaround in performance compared to the last three races when problems with the tyres saw the Briton struggling and downbeat about his championship chances.

Now, he sits atop of the Drivers' standings by 17 points from the Ferrari driver and his confidence is at an all-time high.

“Today the car and myself, I felt that synergy which I hadn’t been feeling for the whole year. It’s a good feeling,” he said.

“This is when we’re going to start trying to continue to apply the pressure [to our rivals]. A one-two for the team. I hope we can continue.”

Teammate Valtteri Bottas benefited from a strategic error by Ferrari to pit Vettel during a Virtual Safety Car period to inherit second place, despite having to complete almost 50 laps on a single set of tyres.

Commenting later, even the Finn was surprised that the Pirellis were able to last and praised the job Mercedes did.

“We had such a good car, the team was so reactive today with the strategy," he said.

“I never believed we could a one-stop but we could. I’m happy. I think as a team this weekend was perfect."

After seeing a first win of the season cruelly snatched away in Baku two weeks earlier, Bottas also remains his convinced his time will come to stand on the top step.

“Of course I wanted to fight for the win,” the 28-year-old stated.

“We need to continue like that and the wins will come.”
