It seems that the possibility of Massimiliano Allegri joining Arsenal is quickly fading.

The Juventus manager had been seen as Arsenal's top candidate to replace Arsene Wenger for some time.

Allegri is reported to have even held talks with Arsenal chiefs, but it has been believed that he will need certain assurances if he is to take the job.

And after his side clinched the Serie A title in Rome on Sunday night, Allegri appeared to take himself out of the running for the Arsenal job.

"If they [Juve’s directors] do not send me away, I think I will stay at Juve next year," the 50-year-old said in his post-match press conference, per the Metro.

"Next year, there will be some players leaving, others arriving, and the objective will be to be in the running for every objective in March again.

"You have to work on yourself and find the motivation within yourself too, setting personal targets as well as those for the group. It’s a wonderful feeling, as it’s never easy to win."

It seems it's bad news for Arsenal fans indeed.

THE NEW NUMBER ONE CANDIDATE

So, with Allegri distancing himself from the job, who is now the number one candidate to replace Wenger?

Many names have already been touted, including Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann and Patrick Vieira.

But according to the Independent, Mikel Arteta is now viewed as the preferable candidate for the manager job.

The 36-year-old has little to no experience in management. He has been a coach just two years under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

But his inexperience seems to be working in his favour.

The report reads that Arsenal are considering the possibility of unearthing a new manager; the appointment of Arteta would do just that.

And it is believed Chief executive Ivan Gazidis wants a figure who is a coach more than a manager. Again, the former Spanish international seems to fall into that bracket.

So even though he only has two years experience, Arteta is now the front-runner for the job.

OTHERS IN THE FRAME

Arsenal have not given up on Allegri completely, however.

He is still viewed as a top candidate, although the differences between the two parties deteriorating the Italian's chances.

Nagelsmann is also mentioned in the report as a manager Arsenal 'admire', although he is expected to stay at Hoffenheim for at least another year.

Enrique also remains in the frame, although his wage demands of around £15 million a year could be a stumbling block.
