It’s set to be a very nervy week for many England internationals.Gareth Southgate will announce his 23-man squad for this summer’s World Cup on Wednesday and there are quite a few decisions to make. While the likes of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker can sit back safe in the knowledge they will on that plane to Russia, some players will just be praying they too will be getting a phone call from Southgate. With the Premier League season now over, there’s no more opportunities to impress the England boss. But one man grabbed his final chance to showcase his skills with both hands.Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey produced a Man of the Match performance as Newcastle thrashed Chelsea 3-0 at St James’ Park.It led to Newcastle’s official Twitter account tagging England in a tweet detailing Shelvey’s brilliant performance in order to catch their attention.

Well, one man that certainly took notice of Shelvey’s display was Newcastle legend Alan Shearer.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer sang Shelvey’s praises and insisted that he should be going to the World Cup - and not Jack Wilshere.

"I would have him in my squad," Shearer said. "We haven’t got players that can do what Shelvey has done for the last five or six months. He keeps the game flowing, his first thought is can he pass it forward.

"He was the best player on the park again today. Head and shoulders above anyone else.

"I’m not saying he should start but if England are wanting to chase a game and put someone on for 20 minutes to try and find that special pass, then he can do it.

"In the past England have taken gambles on players that we can’t rely on because of injury. When I compare it to Jack Wilshere - who has had 12 Premier League starts this season - it’s a huge gamble. I don’t think England can take too many gambles and I don’t think Shelvey will be a gamble."

FOOTBALL FANS AGREE

And it’s an opinion that plenty of England fans agree with.

Another man that agrees that Shelvey should be representing England in Russia is his Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez.

“The way that he has been behaving and playing during the season, especially at the end of the season, I think he is a different kind of midfielder so I am sure he will be in consideration," Benitez said.

“He will be one of the names in the head of the manager until the last minute.

“I think he deserves to be there, especially because of the characteristics that he has and the way he was behaving himself in the last month."

Over to you, Gareth.
