Manchester United finished off their Premier League season with a dull 1-0 victory against Watford.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game as Jose Mourinho's side finished in second place in the league with 81 points.

They will now turn their attentions to the FA Cup final against Chelsea next Saturday.

And after the game at Vicarage Road, Mourinho declared that it had been a good season for the club, despite failing to compete in the Premier League and the Champions League.

"If you want to be positive and respect the effort of everyone and the clear numbers and pragmatic numbers of the improvement, you say all positive things," he said.

"The best position for five years, a huge amount of points that would normally give a fight for the title until the last few weeks, lots of clean sheets, Golden Glove, more goals than last season and the second-best team in the country.

"Also, in the second major competition in the country, we are one of the two best teams; we are playing the final [against Chelsea in the FA Cup] so if you want to read it in a positive way, you can in a very objective way."

JAMIE REDKNAPP URGES MOURINHO TO IMPROVE THE TEAM

Despite Mourinho's comments, it is clear that Man United must improve to bridge the gap to Manchester City.

They have been linked with a whole host of names, including Sergej Milinković-Savić, Alex Sandro and Fred.

And Jamie Redknapp has now had his say on the man that Man United should buy to 'inspire a team to properly challenge City.'

He thinks that Mourinho must buy Gareth Bale from Real Madrid to bring excitement to a currently 'boring' United team.

"They finished second and could win the FA Cup but let’s face it… this is one of the most boring United teams," Redknapp told the Daily Mail.

"They signed off the league season with a 1-0 win over Watford that was shown last on Match of the Day. If Jose Mourinho wants to change that, he should go and buy Gareth Bale.

"He has won it all at Real Madrid and won’t be fazed by the Premier League. United won’t be the only ones after him. If Eden Hazard goes to Real Madrid, I’m sure Chelsea would be keen on a swap deal.

"After a season of limited game time, Bale will be keen to prove he is still a world-class talent. What better way to do so than inspire a team to properly challenge City."

There's no doubt that Bale is still a world-class player when fit. He proved that on the weekend with his two goals against Celta Vigo.

But Man United fans will undoubtedly be wary of his injury problems. He played just 19 games in the league last season, and he has also been on the sidelines for large periods of this campaign.

Mourinho also had a number of attacking players at his disposal: especially on the wing.

Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all occupy those positions, while Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard can also play in Bale's position.

One of them would surely have to leave to accommodate the signing of Bale.
