The 2017-18 Premier League season is finally over after another marathon 38-game campaign involving the top 20 teams in England.

Manchester City were crowned champions, sealing a record-breaking 100 points in the process, while Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool all sealed Champions League football for next season by finishing inside the top four.

Chelsea and Arsenal both missed out on a top-four finish and will be competing in the Europa League next season.

At the opposite end of the table, West Brom, Stoke City and Swansea City were relegated to the Championship.

The three teams promoted to the Premier League last summer - Huddersfield Town, Brighton and Newcastle United - all managed to stay up.

It’s always fascinating to look back and see what football fans and pundits were predicting would happen before the season kicked off in August.

The Mirror have revealed what some of football’s top pundits thought the top four would look like before the 2017-18 campaign got underway - and some of their shouts are spectacularly wide of the mark.

What the pundits predicted in August

Phil Neville

Top four: 1) Manchester United, 2) Manchester City, 3) Chelsea, 4) Arsenal

Surprise package: Everton

Manchester United above Manchester City? Chelsea and Arsenal ahead of Tottenham and Liverpool? Everton the surprise package? Oh, Phil.

For the sake of the England Women’s team, let’s hope he’s better at coaching than making Premier League predictions.

Michael Owen

Top four: 1) Chelsea, 2) Manchester City, 3) Liverpool, 4) Manchester United

Surprise package: West Ham

It won’t come as a shock to most football fans to see that Michael Owen has also had a mare.

The former Liverpool striker, who is hardly the most popular pundit on TV, thought Chelsea would finish above City, Liverpool and United this term.

Better luck this summer, Michael.

Owen Hargreaves

Champions: Manchester City

Surprise package: Everton

Owen Hargreaves didn’t fancy making a top-four prediction, so only decided to name the champions.

In fairness to the former England international, he was spot on.

Peter Schmeichel

Top four: 1) Manchester City, 2) Chelsea, 3) Tottenham, 4) Manchester United

Surprise package: Everton

Two out of four isn’t bad, Pete.

The legendary goalkeeper correctly predicted that City and Spurs would finish first and third, respectively.

Trevor Sinclair

Top four: 1) Manchester City, 2) Chelsea, 3) Manchester United, 4) Arsenal

Surprise package: Bournemouth

Not a terrible prediction from Trevor Sinclair, either.

Chelsea and Arsenal both in the top four over Tottenham and Liverpool wasn’t the best of shouts, mind.

Matt Holland

Top four: 1) Manchester City, 2) Manchester United, 3) Chelsea, 4) Liverpool

Surprise package: Everton

Pretty good Matt, pretty good.

If he’d selected Spurs in place of Chelsea, he would have nailed it.

Lee Dixon

Top four: 1) Manchester City, 2) Manchester United, 3) Chelsea, 4) Arsenal

Surprise package: Brighton

Props to Lee Dixon for his surprise package shout.

Brighton were expected to go straight back down to the Championship but they’ve exceeded all expectations by finishing in 15th position.
