Every major boxing promoter is going to have a couple of fighters that they see as the face of their promotion.

Bob Arum’s Top Rank has had Manny Pacquiao and now Vasyl Lomachenko, Oscar De La Hoya has put all of his efforts into turning Saul Alvarez into a global star, Eddie Hearn's Matchroom has Anthony Joshua while Badou Jack and Gervonta Davis are arguably the most popular stars from Mayweather Promotions.

HI-TECH

Following Saturday night’s event in Madison Square Garden, the world is understandably talking about Lomachenko after his devastating TKO win over Jorge Linares to claim a third world title in three different divisions in only his 12th professional fight.

Since then, names like Mikey Garcia and Ray Beltran have been discussed to battle Hi-Tech next, with the Ukrainian expected to next appear in August to continue his dominant run.

Arum knows that Lomachenko is his prized asset right now, similar to Davis being a crucial member of Floyd Mayweather’s promotion.

However, last month, Tank insinuated that the unbeaten Mayweather was setting him up to fail. Obviously, it’s hard to prove any of that as the Baltimore native is still unbeaten in 20 fights at just 23-years-old.

However, Arum - Lomachenko’s promoter - has now revealed that Mayweather called his company and was interested in staging a fight between Davis and Lomachenko.

SET-UP

Arum believes that Mayweather was mad at Davis and wanted to see him get beaten by Lomachenko; although it’s not clear what caused any dissent between Davis and Mayweather.

Speaking to Fight Hype, Arum said: “I mean...I think you should ask Floyd. Floyd called Todd [duBoef] and I think he was ****** off at Davis and he wanted to see Davis destroyed [against Lomachenko].”

Despite Mayweather wanting to create the fight, it never materialised as both men have taken different routes in their career with Lomachenko now moving up in weight and Davis claiming a world title at super featherweight.

If the fences have been mended between the pair, Mayweather might be glad the fight never materialised, especially with boxing fans claiming that it’s going to take something truly special for someone to outclass Lomachenko.
