Jason Witten has a shocking new team in mind for Dez Bryant

Dez Bryant hasn't attracted a whole lot of free agent attention since his release by the Cowboys last month, but a recently retired former teammate thinks he knows where the enigmatic receiver might play in 2018.

According to Cowboys great Jason Witten, Bryant could well end up with the Green Bay Packers before the start of the season. It's a situation that Witten called a 'great spot' for his longtime teammate to once again prove that he is an elite wideout in the NFL.

"I think Dez is certainly going to have some great opportunities. He's motivated and I think he's going to end up going to the Green Bay Packers," Witten told The Adam Schefter Podcast.

The future Hall of Famer adamantly believes that Bryant still has something to offer a contender, and suggested that the now former Cowboys star could end up being a like-for-like replacement for Jordy Nelson both on and off the field.

"Aaron Rodgers, he throws that back-shoulder throw so well and Dez has great chemistry with a good quarterback that can put the ball wherever he wants. Because I still believe Dez can high-point the football as good as any other wide receiver in the National Football League. So, you partner him up with [tight end] Jimmy Graham and Aaron Rodgers, [he could] go there and really help them take the next step and get back on a playoff run." Witten said.

Nelson, Rodgers' favourite target for nigh on a decade, was allowed to leave Green Bay in free agency and Bryant's skillset does actually mirror the former Packer's to some extent. So, Witten might not be totally crazy making the suggestion, though it does seem fairly outlandish given the Packers historical tendency to shy away from splashy free agent signings.

The offseason capture of former All-Pro Graham may signal a move away from that philosophy that longtime GM Ted Thompson stuck to for so many years, but the need for another wideout isn't glaring in Green Bay.

Los Angeles Rams v Seattle Seahawks

Thompson's replacement Brian Gutekunst added three young pass catchers in the draft to bolster a receiving corps that already includes Pro Bowlers Randall Cobb and Davante Adams, and when one considers how many targets Graham has typically received over his career, it seems unlikely that Bryant would be able to make any kind of significant impact.

Additionally, receiver-turned running back Ty Montgomery is adept at catching the ball out of the backfield and Rodgers even has another dynamic TE in Lance Kendricks to line up in multiple tight-end sets.

Bryant's veteran presence could tempt Gutekunst to take a look at him, but really Rodgers doesn't need the three-time Pro Bowler to put up big numbers.
