Controversial tennis star Fabio Fognini provided one of the shots of the Italian Open with a sublime reverse lob against Dominic Thiem on Wednesday afternoon.

As you can see in the video below, the Italian was stretching for a Thiem forehand on the baseline, when he produced a ridiculous passing lob shot to send his home crowd wild.

The 30-year-old has always had the ability to pull off wonder shots like this but even he let out a huge smile after he watched this shot float perfectly over the head of the world number eight.

The excellent shot spurred Fognini on to a wonderful performance as despite losing the second set, the world No.21 went on to win 6-4 1-6 6-3 progressing to the last sixteen of the Italian Open.

After big wins in this event against talented Frenchman Gael Monfils and now young superstar Dominic Thiem, Fognini may finally be fulfilling the clear talent he has without letting his emotions get to him on the court.

The Italian has tended to let his anger and emotions get the better of him in the past, constantly swearing and fighting with the chair umpire which is why he's become known as one of the bad boys in tennis.

However, despite his behaviour, there is no doubting the talent that Fognini has and there is no doubting that he is capable of pulling out some audacious shots as he showed earlier against Thiem.

If the fiery Italian can continue the form he has shown recently, then there is no reason why he can't compete for his first major, with Roland Garros just around the corner.

Despite beating Monfils and Thiem, there is still some serious competition left in the Italian Open for Fognini, including world number two Rafael Nadal and grand slam tournament winners Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro.
