At long last we know the 23 players England manager Gareth Southgate will take to this summer’s World Cup in Russia.Trent Alexander-Arnold has been rewarded for his breakthrough season at Liverpool with a spot on the plane, while Danny Welbeck, Harry Maguire, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fabian Delph are also in the squad. It’s bad news for Jack Wilshere, Adam Lallana and Joe Hart, though. The three players have all been left out.“I believe this is a squad which we can be excited about,” Southgate explained.“We have a lot of energy and athleticism in the team, but players that are equally comfortable in possession of the ball and I think people can see the style of play we’ve been looking to develop.“It is a young group, but with some really important senior players so I feel the balance of the squad is good, both in terms of its experience, its character and also the positional balance.”Alexander-Arnold, 19, and Loftus-Cheek, 22, provide the youth that Southgate refers to.

Sol Campbell's XI

The 47-year-old must now decide on his starting line-up for the opening group game against Tunisia on June 18 - and he’ll use the upcoming friendlies against Nigeria and Costa Rica to help him make that choice.

Former England defended Sol Campbell has gone ahead and picked his own XI and it’s left fans bemused on Twitter.

Campbell has gone for a strange 3-2-3-2 formation, lacking any full-backs.

Is Campbell just ahead of his time, or is this the reason why he struggles to get a job as a manager?

England fans think it’s the latter.

Check out the reaction below.

Campbell’s formation would surely allow for any opposing winger to have a great deal of success.

There’s just nobody there to mark them.

Is there any need for two wide forwards, a centre-attacking midfielder and two strikers?

Arguably not.

Campbell’s selection would work if England were dominant in possession but we’ve seen over the years that this is simply not their style.

Relying on Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier to control a match, while a lovely thought from an England perspective, simply isn’t going to happen.
