In the last 12 years, 15 of the 23 European finals have been won by Spanish clubs. In fact, in the previous nine European finals, Spanish sides have won eight of them. It’s hard to argue that La Liga boasts the strongest teams in European football right now.Atletico Madrid became the latest La Liga side to triumph on the European stage as they won the 2017/18 Europa League after beating Marseille 3-0 in Lyon.In a little more than a weeks time, their Madrid rivals Real have a chance to win their third consecutive Champions League trophy to further strengthen Spain’s grip on Europe.Real’s final is still more than a week away and they have a league match against Villarreal to think about first. However, they would have no doubt been keeping an eye on proceedings in Lyon to see how their rivals fared.

REAL CONGRATULATED ATLETI AT FULL-TIME

And after Diego Simone’s side eased to a 3-0 win, Real congratulated them in the only way they know how - on Twitter.

They wrote: “Congratulations @Atleti for the @EuropaLeague title obtained tonight in Lyon,” within minutes of the full-time whistle.

Classy.

Real certainly weren’t expected to congratulate their rivals - and certainly not so soon after the final whistle.

Incidentally, Real can no longer finish above Atleti in La Liga with one game remaining. They trail by three points but Simeone’s side boast the best head-to-head record.

Of course, Madrid will be fully expecting a similar tweet in return if they lift the trophy in Kiev.

Los Blancos are looking for their fourth Champions League triumph in the previous five years and face Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on May 26.
