Defender Paddy McCarthy has been confirmed as Crystal Palace's new captain for the forthcoming npower Championship campaign.

The 27-year-old penned a new three-year deal with the club on Friday and has immediately been rewarded with the armband by boss George Burley.

"Paddy is captain and he has just committed to the club for three years," Burley told the South London Guardian.

"He is a leader and a winner and I think some of his defending against Chelsea (in Saturday's pre-season friendly), especially in the first half, he was defending with his life."
