Everyone expected Gianluigi Buffon to announce his retirement from football on Thursday in a pre-arranged press conference.

Buffon’s contract with Juventus expires in the summer and the 40-year-old has previously hinted that he will retire from football at the end of this season.

While the legendary goalkeeper announced he will leave the Old Lady after 17 years with the club, he stopped short of retiring from football altogether.

That’s because he claims he’s had some “interesting proposals” that he will consider this summer.

"Saturday will be my last game for Juventus," Buffon, who has won the Serie A title nine times, said. "I think it's the best way to end this wonderful adventure.

"For now I only know that Saturday I will play a game. Until a few days ago it was certain that I would stop playing. Now there are some interesting proposals.

"In Wojciech Szczesny, Juventus have an excellent goalkeeper, who also has 13 years less than me. Giorgio Chiellini is the perfect example of how a Juve captain should be.

"He has always been a reference for me. I wish him all the best."

Buffon’s next step is unknown and there’s still a possibility we will never see him in professional football again.

And it’s for that reason that football fans were paying tribute to Buffon ahead of the next chapter in his incredible career.

And one man that took to Twitter to pay his respect to Buffon is another legendary goalkeeper - Iker Casillas.

Casillas wrote: “I wish you the best in the next stage that starts for you. You deserve everything good friend @gianluigibuffon,” accompanied with a beautiful picture of the two goalkeepers together.

It’s not the first time Casillas has taken to Twitter to show his support for Buffon, though.

After Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup earlier this season, Casillas tried comforting Gigi after he was seen in tears in an emotional interview after the game.

Casillas wrote: “I don’t like to see you like this. I see you how many other still see you: a legend. I’m proud to know you and proud to have faced you many times. You can still delight us in friendly football!”

This bromance brings a tear to the eye…
