Valtteri Bottas is hoping his dynamic start to the Formula One season and burgeoning relationship with teammate Lewis Hamilton will buy him a new long-term contract with Mercedes.

Bottas has come back from an inauspicious eighth-place finish in Australia, and would be hot on the tail of the Brit at the top of drivers' rankings was it not for a late puncture in Baku, which leaves him in third.

Currently only on a one-year deal for 2018, the Flying Finn told Autosport: “I always kind of had one-year deals, so I would naturally like to know at least for the next two years what I'm going to do."

Of team-boss Toto Wolff, he revealed: "We speak a lot. We are very open always about my performance, about the car performance.

"We haven't yet talked anything about next year, we think it's still a bit early."

But, he will be letting his driving do the talking and not be bringing offers from rival teams to the negotiating table.

"I would like to stay with this team, hopefully for a long time. That is my target.

"As long as I keep performing like I've been performing this year so far, naturally it should be OK, all good."

Mercedes may also reflect on the alchemy between Bottas and Hamilton as they decide on future drivers.

Hamilton’s defiance of team orders in a failed bid to snatch the 2016 drivers' title from former teammate Nico Rosberg potmarked a fractious relationship between the two. In sharp contrast, Bottas enjoys a positively harmonious relationship with the Brit.

“It started off well, but it's only got better as we got to know each other," said Bottas. "We have very good respect both ways.

"We are good teammates. We want to help the team together and work together."

Only do not go ruling out fireworks between the pair in future

"But we also want to win," Bottas concluded.
